Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Little preschool hands are constantly grasping and grabbing to explore and learn about the world. I have 14 little sets of hands with special needs that wiggle non-stop! I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Irving School on Chicago's west side. There are very few self-contained special education classes that serve preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Chicago area, therefore, my students are bussed from neighborhoods throughout the city. To qualify for services in my classroom, the students are either significantly developmentally delayed or diagnosed with a specific disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a genetic disorder. I currently service 14 children with chronological ages from 3-6 and developmental skills from 12 months through 5 years. My little ones are constantly moving and exploring. They are encouraged to become active, independent learners, a trait that will impact the rest of their lives. Early math skills such as counting, numeral recognition, sorting, and patterning are essential for success. Young children with special needs learn best through hands-on exploration of the world. With active spirits and hands, we need endless supplies of manipulatives to engage the children in focused learning activities. I am requesting a variety of kits that will expose the children to new and exciting ways to engage them in math. Counting with candles on birthday cakes, sorting colored keys, and creating numerous math centers throughout the classroom will enrich each day and expose them to "old" information in a "new" way.
