Let me introduce myself to you. I am a third grade teacher who after 14 years of teaching can still be brought to tears by a good book. Imagine the feeling I got when students in my class last year also shed tears after listening to author Patricia Polacco's books being read aloud to them. Now, let me clarify that I do not want to make my students cry! But this author writes from her heart and touches so many by her style of writing and her sharing of memoirs from her childhood that I cannot let my current class of 17 third graders escape those tears. My problem is that because last years' darlings loved hearing her stories so much, they read, read, read her books until the pages became torn and fell out!
I am once again ready to begin an author study on Patricia Polacco. My students would greatly appreciate some new Patricia Polacco books to enjoy. It is not always easy to motivate students to pick up a book to read. My plan is to read some of her books and then let her magic inspire them to read and write for enjoyment. Using an author study helps reluctant readers and writers become interested in books by exposing them to some mighty powerful literature. If I could have six copies of some of her books along with a guide for using her books in the classsroom, I would be thrilled!
