My students need 25 individual copies of Ben Mikaelsen's "Touching Spirit Bear" and "Ghost of Spirit Bear" books for a class reading project to change bullying behaviors as well as several other book titles.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember a book you read as a child that touched your spirit? The story of a bully, a victim and a Spirit Bear can be that experience for my students in Ben Mikaelsen's Touching Spirit Bear and sequel Ghost of Spirit Bear .
Sixth grade students in an urban school with a high poverty rate struggle with basic needs before school demands are addressed.
This is a bilingual school with 600 students. My class is part of the major achievement program where students have potential to succeed but often do not show initiative or responsibility. Wasted chances keep them from succeeding academically. High rates of suspension and discipline problems plague their learning.
My Project
Students love these Spirit Bear books. There is absolute silence when they are being read aloud to class. The story of a bully and the violence he commits unfortunately is familiar to the listeners. The intense scenes of sacrifice and commitment to others impresses students. These stories show another way of dealing with misbehavior that brings healing and discipline instead of punishment and and resentment. If you think that a good story can change lives give this chance to my students.
Through reading, research and class discussions of the Spirit bear stories students can think for themselves and discover values that combat reactive street behaviors. My students will learn that violence is not the only way to deal with emotions. Give them a chance to read spirit changing stories to guide thinking to see the effect of behavior and the consequences on yourself and others.
Be the Spirit Bear that tears away at old thought patterns and reactions.
