My Students

I have thirty-eight students in my fourth grade this year. The class has sixteen boys and twenty-two girls. Nine students have special learning needs, one has a life threatening illness and eight receive additional services for math outside of the special education program. I want to build my students' conceptual knowledge of math practices. To do so, I need more hands-on supplies. I currently have just enough to demonstrate with a document camera. We are in a low income area.

My Project

This project contains student hands-on packs for place value and fraction, as well as, flip books for exploring equivalent fractions. Fourth graders have a difficult time creating images of large numbers and fractions. These items will help students learn fractions and place value by using their hands to create pictures in their minds of what large numbers and fractions mean. They will go beyond just memorizing them. Once these pictures are created, they will be able to relate large numbers and different fractions to real word circumstances and life experiences.
