This class may be small, but they have huge hearts. Currently, my classroom has 6 students, but this number fluctuates continuously throughout the year. We also share all materials within our program of 30 students, all of which have very special talents and skills. Our classroom is a part of the district-wide Therapeutic Learning Program which serves children at various grade levels who present challenges in emotional regulation and social skills. These students often are referred to our program for large emotional outbursts. They all have very specific learning needs and are on vastly different levels. All of my students need extra help understanding and regulating their emotions.
They are a great group of children who need some extra chances and challenges.
As a substantially separate classroom, our goal is to support each student to the best of our ability and to reach them in any way possible.
My students are given amazing opportunities to interact with each other and with the materials. However, our technology is lacking and though we have access to it, the students do not always. My students struggle with fine motor skills, as they are only 6 years old, but are required to use online platforms that require a computer. We need mice to help them. The students try to use the track pads, and get extremely frustrated, which then lead to them spending their time trying to move the cursor rather than doing the learning.
I was very grateful that my district was able to supply a projector and a document camera that greatly help my students, but not to the extent that I wish for them.
However, a simple piece of technology can be added to the projector which turns my regular white board into an interactive smart board! The students can interact with everything that I am able to pull up on my computer!
