My students are an eager-to-learn group of kids. I was able to meet them at a "meet the teacher" event just before this school year was supposed to start and then Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast where our school is located. Due to the recent tragic events of Hurricane Harvey, we had a three week delay to the start of our school year, but it hasn't discouraged my students. They have persevered and are working hard to get caught up.
Our school is located in Southeast Texas and all of our students are on the free breakfast and lunch program.
These families are already considered to be of low socioeconomic level and now many have lost everything they own due to Hurricane Harvey and the flooding that was a direct result of the storm.
In our classroom, the students use several educational computer programs to enhance our curriculum. My young learners struggle with basic computer skills such as keyboarding skills and using the mouse. I believe that students would be able to better utilize our computer based programs through the use of a touch screen device.
My students, unfortunately, lost several weeks of instruction due to Hurricane Harvey.
It has been a struggle to get them master certain concepts due to this loss of time and distractions from home. I feel the familiarity and ease of using a touch screen device to work on our web-based curriculum will help them to remain focused on their task and will be a helpful tool for them to succeed.
