I'm a Special Education Teacher in High Point NC. I currently serve students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. All the students I work with have learning disabilities and are performing below their current grade levels in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Each student is unique in the way that they learn and process information. This is especially true in math. Many students are ?visual? learners, meaning they need to see the problem with possibly pictures and/or manipulatives. Some students are ?auditory? learners, meaning they need to hear the lessons. I have found that most of my learning disabled students need a mixture of both. They need to have a ?hands on? approach. That is why I am requesting a program called TouchMath. TouchMath is a multi-sensory teaching approach. It uses hands-on manipulation and memorization. The students are able to interact with the numbers on the paper by seeing, saying, hearing, and touching numbers as they complete the problems. This is perfect for those students who require a more ?hands on? approach. TouchMath has been proven to accelerate math comprehension. The program teaches counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, story problems, time, money and fractions. All of which the students need to learn throughout all the grade levels. My focus of this proposal is on the program geared toward the lower grades. It's very important that these students get a firm grasp on the basics of math in order to move on to more difficult tasks.
