Touch Lives as My Students Are Touching Spirit Bear
Help me give my students the beauty and inspiration of watching a life become changed from a path of self destruction and hopelessness to one of strength, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My young student scholars are a diverse, but driven, community of young adults. They are outwardly eager to experience all that the world has to offer, while inwardly frightened and seeking guidance from those of us blessed to be their teachers.
From a socioeconomic standpoint, they are all struggling, with many of these young people having to work outside of the home to assist their families.
The opportunity, and money, to go and purchase books to read is often non-existent. Yet, when they are introduced to new books and ideas, they show an excitement that they struggle to keep hidden, that it might not be quashed.
The titles that we are seeking to introduce them to are as diverse and thrilling as our students themselves! Please, help us to turn the key that unlocks the golden door of freedom for these young scholars (with respect to George Washington Carver).
My Project
"Touching Spirit Bear" will join "Wonder" and "The Book Thief" as one of our master texts in our 8th grade studies next year. We find that as our students are introduced to more and more diversity in the literature we are teaching, the more they are embracing their own diversity in class and in the community.
As our scholars come to know Cole, many of them will recognize and, perhaps, come to know themselves.
In addition, they are going to encounter a culture and system of justice utterly foreign to their life experiences. The beauty of the Tlinget culture and traditions are brought to life for them, and this in turn sparks a deeper desire to learn more.
