Touch Chromebook = Science Fuel to Explore and STEAM On!
My students need a touchscreen Chromebook that flips into an Electric Canvas to create STEAM projects to incorporate both art and coding in our science classroom.
Einstein said "Imagination is more important than knowledge." By stimulating my students' imagination, I strive to build a love of learning that will help my science students gain the knowledge they need, both now and in their future.
Although our district is not rich, the hands-on learning experiences that I engage my students in, strive to be as rich as possible.
Our school receives 100% funding for free breakfast and lunch, for all students. My sixth grade science students and science club work best when they interact with what they're learning. Many of my students have not been outside their own community, making it hard to visualize science concepts or understand vocabulary that they have never seen or heard. The only way to support students with limited life experiences is to provide opportunities for them to see, touch, interact with, and talk about the concepts they are expected to learn. Through my science classes and science club, students are given opportunities to feel like everyday is a field trip, where they are transported to new interactions within the science world, and most importantly, where they are the center of this learning.
My Project
This Chromebook will help make our classroom closer to a 1-1 science class as well as flips to offer our class a tablet that can run both online sites and apps! This two in one technology will be used by 6th grade science classes, Middle School Science Olympiad team, and an after school Science Club that will participate this year in an art based competition called Project Genius. Technology aids in differentiation when students have so many needs, but it also opens doors to how students show their learning. I feel that the reference in the title of this project "to Explore and STEAM on" is fitting, because it is often through the ability to create that my students learn and are engaged the most.
The ability to turn into a tablet makes this Chromebook more than a computer; it makes it an ELECTRIC CANVAS to pair drawings and designs with documents and technology projects.
An example of this use is when a recent Science Olympiad group found it easier to draw and edit their roller coaster plan on a site called sketch.io rather than on paper. Through online drawing sites like this, animation sites like ABCY Animate, and actual art apps students will be able to show their ideas and understanding through a variety of mediums. Many students are interested in graphic design or favor art as their best subject. This Chromebook helps to reach both of these interests.
Coding is also a growing emphasis in my school system, but as a teacher of all needs I find this challenging if not impossible. The touch ability will allow me to offer coding experiences to students with learning disabilities using touch device features. Students can also draw patterns in art coding programs. Thank you for helping us "STEAM On!"
