If you were to peek in our classroom, even for a short moment, you would be unable to keep from smiling. We are a group of kind, caring, enthusiastic students with a BIG heart for learning! Our class is a kindergarten-first grade combination class, comprised of 13 first graders and 10 kindergartners.
Despite the fact that we come from different types of families, different socioeconomic situations, and bring different levels of academic ability to the classroom, we work together as a classroom "family", where no student is excluded or discouraged on their path to success.
Our school is over 50 years old, tucked away in a neighborhood close to downtown. Despite very supportive teachers and extremely dedicated teachers, it is difficult to provide the number of devices needed to allow multiple students to use them at the same time - particularly when they are expensive resources. Having spent a large portion of my own money on my students and my classroom, I, unfortunately, do not have the means to make this happen for my wonderful students. This is why I am coming to Donors Choose.
My Project
My students need a Samsung tablet, which they would share, to participate and succeed in our technology-driven curriculum.Technology in the classroom is something that I am passionate about, and it is something that our public schools are working to incorporate more of for our students. Countless technological resources exist for teachers to use and enhance student learning experiences ..however, the money to provide all of the technology our schools need to implement these programs just isn't there. I have spent many hours training and researching the best ways to use technology in my K-1 combination classroom, and I am anxious to begin making it a part of our daily learning experience!
My students would use this tablet to create, collaborate, share and receive information that will help them to become well-rounded, successful learners.
The tablet format is the most developmentally appropriate for my age group, as being able to 'touch' and manipulate items on the screen is easier for them than manipulating a mouse or track pad and keyboard. In addition to that, many of the programs geared toward our age group are meant for tablets or touch-screen devices. We would use this device to solve and represent math problems, share pictures and videos of our work with our families and peers, and even create and write stories to publish!
Receiving this tablet would benefit all 23 students in my class, and my future students who will come after them. It will make a huge difference in the activities that I am able to implement in my classroom, and in the level of engagement of my students.
