My Students

Student's have an array of sensory needs that must be met in order for them to participate in the general education classroom. Some students perceive whispers as yells, a gentle touch could feel like a slap...

Students have difficulty processing incoming stimuli.

This is an example of what it is like for them: “Turn on the radio, but do not tune it. Leave it on static and fuzz. Turn it up. Ask someone to turn the lights on and off. Strap yourself into a broken chair that is missing a leg and use a table that is off balance—you know the ones in restaurants that makes us all so mad. Now put on some scratchy lace in place of a comfortable T-shirt, put your pants on backwards and wear shoes one size too small. Pour a bowl of grated Parmesan cheese, open a can of sardines and bring the cat box to the table. Now snack on your least favorite food, the one you never eat because it comes with a gag reflex. With all this in place, pick up a new book and learn something

When their sensory needs are met, they are productive, participating students with their peers.

My Project

Students who engage in sensory activities have demonstrated improvement in: social interaction, concentration, focus , increase time on task, and improve classroom participation.

Research has shown that lighting, such as the Shimmering Light Curtain, and the lights on the ceiling, will offer a calming place where students can manage their anxiety, recharge, and be ready to learn.

This will level the playing field with their peers.

These items are part of a bigger plan that is a work in progress. Our goal is to create a MultiSensory Room to meet the needs of busy learners. Adding these items will benefit students who are currently struggling and we will be one step closer to our goal!
