I have the pleasure of teaching a very unique third grade Inclusion class this year in a high needs school. A large percentage of my students receive special education and speech/language services. Needless to say, my class has a wide range of reading levels and abilities.
Our school uses a program called Accelerated Reader (AR) to track and monitor progress in reading comprehension. Silent reading time is anything BUT silent in my classroom! My struggling readers really need to hear themselves read, but at the same time, it can be quite distracting to other students who need it to be quiet for them to concentrate.
Recently, I came across unique devices at a conference I attended that would solve this problem. Toobaloos! Tooba-whats!? Toobaloos look like mini phones and students can softly speak into them. The Toobaloos magnify their voices so they can hear their sounds and words better. That way, they won't interrupt other readers around them. These will surely help them with fluency and reading comprehension.
Students can even use the Toobaloos during Writing time to reread their stories to themselves or practice their spelling words. I can even see them using them during our Math Small Group time to practice their basic math facts.
These will really help my sensory learners gain more self-confidence and motivation. What third grader WOULDN'T want to use something called a Toobaloo?
Who would have thought that something with such a silly sounding name would hold so many possibilities and fun learning experiences for an inclusion teacher and her students? Your generous donation will ensure that all students in my room can practice reading fluency and other skills. I am positive that these Toobaloos will help my students in a variety of ways. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this proposal!
