Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In life, we all face hurdles, but for children living with special educational needs, life's hurdles often become barriers that can halt a child's progress before the race even begins. One such barrier that I now confront with the children in my class is their inability to read on grade level.
This is an obstacle we have all faced and overcome because someone took the time to help us and arm us with the tools we needed to progress.
The children in my class now stand at the same barrier you and I traversed long ago. But unlike you and I, the circumstances of their lives mean that they must carry loads of baggage with every step they take. Their special education needs coupled with the socio-economic realities of their neighborhood, make it more difficult, and even more imperative that they make progress in literacy to ensure a lifetime of success. Currently in second and third grade, my students are reading an average of two years behind grade level. Without additional and early intervention beyond what I can currently offer the students in resources and time, it is likely that the literacy gap will continue to grow and all facets of their education and lives will be affected. But don't worry, you can help!
My Project
I am seeking whatever help I can garner to provide my students with a listening center. A listening center is a dedicated space in our classroom outfitted with a set of technological tools to help build their reading skills. The listening center is comprised of a storage unit, a cd player, headphones, and a set of read along books they will use to help build their sight word recognition in addition to their listening and comprehension skills.
In addition to addressing these needs, a listening center provides a quiet retreat for the children to escape to and work independently, a tool that will serve them for a lifetime. There are many things wrong with the system that we cannot fix, but there are some things that we can. This is one of them! Every step forward that these children take, and every threshold they are able to cross from this point forward will depend upon their ability to read.
Their ability to read will allow them to acquire information, make judgments, and move forward in life.
You give a man a fish and he eats for a day, you teach him to fish, and he eats for a lifetime. With whatever donation you can afford, you can help me give these children the tools to feed their minds for a lifetime. 1$ or $100 will help to change a life and impact a future more than you may ever know. You can make a difference. Thank you in advance :)
