My 5th graders are some of the most loving and kind group of keiki (kids) I've been able to teach and learn with. They are charismatic, enthusiastic and a delight to discuss and debate with.
The students at our school have so much to say, and when provided with the space and tools, are able to do just that!
Whether in the school or community, doing academics or extracurriculars, these keiki surprise me day in and day out with their innovative ways of thinking and problem-solving the world around them.
My Project
My grade level partner and I do a ton of collaboration, presentations, and discussion share outs amongst our 42 student 5th grade class. We act as facilitators for our students as they engage in small or whole group work, which can be challenging at times because of the number of voices we have to listen and pull ideas from to share to the collective group. However, this tends to lead to the kids being spit down the middle, with half constantly wanting to share and give in-put, and half fading into the sides and shying away from the discussion.
My goal is to help all students understand the power that their voice holds, and how to use their voice to carry their thoughts and ideas amongst a group.
The Qballs would help to give my students the opportunity to practice active listening and speaking in front of others. By having a ball to throw and catch, students would have a kinesthetic activity to notify them of who's speaking and therefore who they should be giving their attention to. As well as wanting to catch the ball and use the microphone could help with engagement and overall participation during discussions. The eager half would know not to overtake the discussion, and the meager half would have a chance to get their voices out there.
I think Qball would be the perfect way to share out thoughts and ideas in and outside of the classroom in an engaging and energetic way!
