Promoting kindness and instilling a growth mindset are the foundations for my classroom. One of the first books we read is “How Full is Your Bucket?” This inspires kindness from the beginning of the year. When students can show tolerance, patience, and a gentleness for peers and adults within the school setting, the classroom is a warm place to spend the day. Students in my class then are able to not only show each other how to be kind little people, but encourage their peers with the “I can do it!” attitude of positivity and growth thinking.
When observing my students you may hear phrases such as: “I am going to train my brain,” or “My brain is getting stronger,” and “I believe in the power of yet!”
Our Title I school provides breakfast and lunch for every student, which means less food insecurities and more learning. Students understand they get what they need to be successful and that doesn’t always mean they get the same things. My first graders are confident, “I’ll try anything,” kind, problem solvers, and are happy to come to school each day.
My Project
So many books and so little time! My students already love to read books; all sorts of books, from nonfiction animal books to silly picture books to biographies. My students truly love reading! This book set will give all levels of readers the opportunity to read comic books. It even comes with teacher lesson plans to help me teach! Since there are so many books in this set, readers at every level will be able to read them.
“Books are a uniquely portable magic” -Stephen King
Magic. Books are magic and my firsties understand how you can get immersed in a book. You feel as though you are part of the story. I read chapter books to my students every day after lunch, and they are fully engrossed in the story. One of their favorites is Junie B. Jones. It’s amazing that I, as their teacher, can get students excited about reading and they feel like they are right next to Junie B. Jones!
