Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first and second graders love books that capture their imagination and inspire their learning. Each week they read short stories, "think, pair, and share" with oral language, create sentences, and draw pictures to tell and retell favorite stories.
My students receive special education support for part of the school day through our Resource Program.
They attend a small, urban-community school where the majority of students are English-learners and eligible for free or reduced-fee lunch. Many of their families struggle to provide literature in English or to go to a library regularly and find it difficult to support literacy at home.
My students are energetic, funny, and eager little learners who each struggle in their own way because of learning differences including specific learning disabilities, ADHD, and those on the Autism Spectrum.
They have a harder time accessing instruction in the general-ed setting. They love reading books in small groups but many books in their classrooms are too hard for them to decode (read) and understand. We challenge ourselves every day in the Resource program to bridge that gap and have fun with books!
My Project
Common Core focuses on close reading to teach genre, author's purpose, opinions, story structure, and character analysis. Comics and graphic novels practice these skills and comprehension strategies using high interest/low reading-leveled books that are perfect for my students. This set of comics-style graphic novels are stories told with pictures supported by short sentences and captions that are rich in dialog and figurative language- just what my squirmy little students need to keep them interested and engaged. They will read, talk about, and learn to write similar stories drawing their own comic story frames.
This book set offers 5 stories, each with 6 student books and lesson plans for teaching a small group. There are also other titles that follow these characters in new adventures, allowing students to learn more about favorite authors and characters.
My project creates a student-centered, differentiated educational environment so students can learn the skills and strategies of good readers and progress alongside their typical-learning peers.
To be successful we need high-interest/low reading-level books for direct instruction. This project fits these needs. The lesson plans support instruction that is clear, explicit, and presented in a predictable format to reduce stress and anxiety in special needs students.
