My 2nd-5th grade students are all deaf or hard-of-hearing, but that's where the similarities end!
My students come from many different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.
Some have been at our school since they were three, others have just arrived with interrupted education or little-to-no access to language in their home country. Most are considered English Language Learners. Many have disabilities such as visual impairments, developmental delays, or emotional/behavioral challenges. Some students sign, some talk, some use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), some do a little of everything. They are resilient, funny, and hardworking students. I am proud to work with them every day!
My Project
My students need a set of TOON graphic novels to promote visual literacy and expand our classroom's library choices.
For so many students, all it takes is the right book to launch into a lifetime love of reading.
This project is for a set of TOON graphic novels for our classroom library. These books are high-interest comics and visual narratives to engage elementary readers in genres include mythology, fantasy, adventure, and fairy tales. My students benefit from having access to a variety of books and they always love the action and excitement of a graphic novel!
I want to continue to encourage their love for learning and reading! Choice is so important to create learners who love reading. My students need to have access to books they are excited about and know that all reading is important! I know my students would be thrilled to have more choices in our classroom.
Will you help us gain access to new books and build our classroom library? Thank you for TOONing in to our classroom!
