Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Pre-K through seventh grade elementary school in the largest public school district in Louisiana. Each grade level includes two ESL designated classes, and we offer Spanish Immersion in Kindergarten through seventh grade.
The majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes with single parents.
We are a Title I school with approximately 90% of our students considered minorities. Our students come from many different cultural backgrounds: Hispanic, Arabic, Asian, African American, and White. Also, 100% are on the free breakfast and lunch program.
Regrettably, school funds are very limited when it comes to purchasing extras for the students. Also, many of our families do not have the funds to send in extras for the classroom. Because of limited funds, we often do not have funds for the needy. Many of our teachers spend their own money to help students when in need. We need to protect our future and invest in these students and their potential.
My Project
Perfect for early elementary grades, this collection includes titles that will introduce avid and reluctant readers alike to the pleasure of comics. The students will be allowed to check these books out in the library and read for their pleasure.
Reluctant early readers will love having comic books that are on level and of interest to them just like the older students do.
Graphic books are what students want and are the highest demand in the library. My goal is to provide the books that they are interested in reading.
