My students come to school every day anxious to learn and to be together. Many of them face challenges at home, and are being raised by single parents. Our Title I school is located in a high poverty neighborhood and many students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite these facts, my second graders come to school willing to work hard to learn all they can.
My students are active, curious and love to be at school.
In spite of the challenging home lives many of them have. When they arrive in the classroom, we are a community of learners who work and play together. Before long, we are friends who encourage, support and challenge each other. Though many of the kids do not have experiences considered "typical" for childhood, I know that they are all capable of so much in the areas of reading, math, writing, science and social studies. Nothing gives me more joy than to see them discover all the things they can be successful at.
My Project
My students write daily. We begin the school year writing personal narratives, which are stories about our lives. Next we learn about writing non fiction, science lab reports, poetry and more. Second graders know that a full color illustration adds so much to a book. They will use the watercolors funded by this project to add beautiful illustrations to their books.
We write books, just like real authors.
My students need two electrical pencil sharpeners to keep regular and colored pencils in good working order. My students love to write and to add accurate illustrations of their characters to their books. The multicultural colored pencils funded by this project will allow them to reflect accurately their unique skin color.
