They say a smile is the universal language. My students are mostly English Learners who come to school each day with a smile and an eagerness to learn. We are a Title I, K-6 school, with over 75% of students receiving free or reduced lunch, which reflects the poverty level in our community.
I love that my 6th graders are funny, creative, full of energy, and they challenge me each day.
They all have so many different abilities and unique talents, and I hope to connect with all my students this school year.
My Project
My students are getting challenged each day with more complicated math in 6th grade. To solve some math problems, they would have to solve multiple parts and it can result in spending a great amount of time on many different steps in one problem. This causes frustration for many students, especially those who already struggle with math. They can make one simple miscalculation on one part and would then be unable to solve the rest of the problem.
Having a calculator as a tool would ease my students' frustration.
They can use the calculators to help check the accuracy of their work and eliminate the long and tedious computations. It would allow them to move on quickly and will be ready to learn, love, and value math with a sharpened pencil and calculator in hand.
