My school is in a predominantly low-income area, many families struggling to make ends meet. Many come to school lacking the supplies needed to be successful have difficulty completing practice assignments at home because of a lack of supplies and resources, which takes a toll on their ability to grow and make progress, including social emotional skills.
I want my students to be engaged and feel confident in their abilities to take control of their learning and emotions!
Especially given our unique circumstances the past two years with COVID-19, we are seeing a drastic decline in our students' abilities to manage their emotions and demonstrate appropriate social emotional skills.
I currently have 6 students in my classroom who participate in our school's check in/check out program (behavior management charts) and a few who, though not in the program, consistently struggle to self-manage. Given the demographics and needs of my students, I would absolutely love to provide them with a calm-down space within our classroom where they can feel safe to share their feelings and practice techniques that will allow them to get back to the learning environment ready to engage with classmates.
My Project
My students are in need of significant supports and tools to assist them in managing their emotions.
These tools will be used to create a calm down space within our classroom and to practice using these skills during small groups.
The plants, rug and puzzles will be placed in a space in our classroom where students will be allowed to go if they need a minute to regroup and calm down. The games will be used to practice using these social emotional skills in a safe and fun way with their peers in a small group.
