My Students

"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery."

Mark Van Doren

Students in our district are from a small, rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our community has a lower socio-economic population, with state data showing 57% of the students being economically disadvantaged and 77% of the eligible students participating in free and reduced lunch programs. Our attendance averages above 95% daily with only one day this past year below 90%. Our students are dedicated and enthusiastic learners. They react well to research-based instruction. My goal is to purchase supplies allowing us to support academic and social situations, and focus on individual living and life skills. When this project is funded, my students will be able to have additional resources that will allow them to thrive educationally and emotionally in an effort to meet each individual’s personal potential.

My Project

My classroom had a sensory project funded earlier this year and we have seen an amazing impact the items have had with individual students. After consulting with general education teachers, I have heard them say that they would be interested in using multi-sensory items with their general education students. This project is a beginning point for meeting this need.

Our requested items are diverse in order to meet individual student needs.

The body sock will be used for students who are looking for proprioceptive (movements & positioning of the body) input. This will give them feedback from their limbs while stretching and moving inside the sock. The gel maze and chewy necklaces are items students use to help focus during instruction without being distracting to themselves or others in the class. Adults will use walkie-talkies to communicate with each other when a student is acting out or in an unsafe manner allowing a team to assemble and assist with the situation safely. They use batteries quickly, so we would like rechargeable items to use. The bean bag filler is for refilling alternative seating that has gone flat. Finally, we added some healthy snacks for students to eat when they are hungry.
