I teach roughly 60 students that are eager to learn computer repair. Most of the students found the program by bringing their Chromebook to our student run help desk. They were fascinated that some of their peers were actually performing the repairs on the Chromebooks. These students are very excited about having the responsibility of keeping all 3000 of our Chromebooks in working condition.
A good portion of the students are coming to school regularly because they feel an obligation to our help desk.
This is a fantastic way to get them engaged in our school culture of success.
Most of the students come from low income households and do not have the same opportunities as other students.
The students will use the tool-kits to repair approximately 3000 Chromebooks. We are currently running an IT Service Desk for most of the day at our school to ensure all students have 24/7 access to the technology they need to be successful in school. Everyone has one to one tech and it has changed the way our students think about education and my students are the first line of support for this endeavor.
If my students have the appropriate tools it will keep the general school population working hard everyday in the classroom.
It also provides my students an opportunity to build confidence and self esteem by successfully repairing the devices. I love to hear "Ms O'Neill I fixed the battery and now the student has a working Chromebook."
This is a new program and we do not have all the supplies we need. Funding this project will keep the IT Service Desk running for the next year.
