My Students

My classes are populated with young people from two locales: Livonia (residents) and Detroit (schools-of-choice). All of my students come from predominately blue-collar homes with hardworking, industrious, and caring families that are committed to giving their children the best possible lives. Interestingly, the students who live in this district generally have deep family roots. It’s very common to hear that the parents and older siblings of my current students are graduates of our school, too.

I have come to know the students in my classes as wonderfully imaginative, intuitively tenacious, and extremely social.

In fact, their tendency to talk out difficult problems is the hallmark of my students. Through the use of student-centered activities, classroom discussions, and frequent student presentations, I strive to foster an environment that strengthens that quality.

My Project

It has been said that in order to learn mathematics, a student must do mathematics. So much of mathematics learning is abstract, like learning how a genre of equations behaves under certain constraints. In modern times, students often are allowed to use graphing software to help them.

I sincerely believe that one very strong aspect in mathematics learning is using geometric construction tools (rulers, protractors, and compasses) to graph shapes and functions by hand, and with a high level of accuracy.

When students experience how a function or geometric shape is created based on specific parameters, they come to understand at a more personal level the causality of the variables.
