Power tools in the art room?! Yes, power tools for high school students to use while they are learning about 3-dimensional design. Every year I teach a lesson on assemblages and art from found objects. The students are required to look at items they would normally consider to be trash. This is part of a cross-curricular lesson on the impact of our trash on the environment. We take these discards and assemble artwork. The ultimate goal is for the students to learn how the elements and principle of design are used in non-representational art. Up to this point we have used hand tools and I have lent my power drill to the project. The use of power tools will allow the students to exercise even more creativity. The work will take on a more substantial quality and reflect better craftsmanship. We require a drill, a power screwdriver, and a jigsaw and miter box. I already have safety glasses and clamps.
