Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when your math teacher told you to graph an exponential function, and you did not know why? My students use math functions not as an end goal, but as vehicles to understand the world around them. These graphing calculators will support their ongoing investigation and learning.
There is truly no one way to describe my students.
These young scholars envision themselves as doctors, artists, architects, chefs, soldiers, and lawyers. As learners, they possess many different skill levels. As peers, they often demonstrate a collaborative spirit. As young people, they exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a drive for independence. Invariably, they take pride in their diverse accomplishments and are passionate about their loved ones. Many of them will go on to be the first in their families to attend four-year universities. Some will be the first to graduate high school. No matter their goals, skill set, or traits, all possess a strong desire to succeed academically.
My Project
This small set of graphing calculators will make a large difference in my students' ability to further their mathematical understanding. My students are currently taking Math Analysis, a class that encompasses topics from algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. In our classroom, students apply newly acquired knowledge to model and understand real-life situations, such as financial planning, population growth, and sound travel. In order to be successful, my students need tools that will allow them to process and analyze data. These calculators will give them the technical support they need.
While these calculators will greatly enrich my students' academic experience, their high cost presents a definite obstacle to their use.
The vast majority of my students come from low-income families; most cannot afford a $100 calculator. Your donations, then, will provide my students with a tool key to their learning of mathematics that they might otherwise not have.
