My students need paper, pencils, large graph paper, rulers, and compasses for use in math class. Many of my students have difficulty providing their own materials for use in the classroom.
I teach in a small, rural high school in the foothills of western North Carolina. This school is in an impoverished area and over half of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. Most of the students I teach are 9th or 10th grade students.
Many of the students that I teach are not financially able to purchase even basic school supplies, much less extra tools that would be beneficial for them to use in a mathematics classroom.
I would like to help give every student in my classroom access to these basic tools for use when they are at school.
My Project
In Math 2 Honors and Math 3, students learn to use a compass for what it was designed - constructions of angles, angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, polygons, and other basic geometric figures. Students are usually unfamiliar with the use of a compass, except for using it to draw circles. We also specifically use these constructions to help develop theorems related to special segments in triangles and the angle measures in polygons. Lessons in Geometry dealing with constructions help students to see applications of geometric concepts outside the classroom.
Many of the compasses that I currently have for use in the classroom are over 15 years old and are in very bad shape - students need to have access to newer compasses in order to make constructions easier to learn and less time consuming.
I also included basic consumables in this project since many of my students may begin the school year with a set of school supplies but those are never replenished throughout the year.
