Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle schoolers with a growth mindset? Tweens and teens with the understanding that failure is part of learning? Preschoolers, kinders, and elementary children with sixth, seventh, and eighth grade partners in learning? YES! Our school students are engaged in a project-based learning model where inquiry, collaboration, and risk-taking are part of the process.
They may speak a first language other than English, struggle with the perils of poverty, or require additional differentiated support for educational or behavioral differences, but they are building a culture of learning that is unique, impressive, and is making a difference.
We challenge these students with the task of becoming leaders, innovators, and communicators. They work daily in their communities to search for solutions, hone new skills, and become more interesting people.
My Project
This project is a part of a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art/design, math) dream to build an electronic, robotic, and virtual technology makerspace in our school library to develop a maker culture among our entire school community. The makerspace and experimental library lab will generate intrigue and hands-on, minds-on excitement as young children work collaboratively or competitively to solve unique problems and be innovative users of technology.
Makerspaces enrich teaching and learning in an unparalleled fashion by combining complex, real-world analysis with play-driven investigation.
Students grow an increased awareness of the basic principles and concepts of electronics, robotics, mathematics, and engineering and practice applying them through their own inquiry and invention. They acquire and properly utilize academic vocabulary as they create their own robots to demonstrate rules, test theories, and problem-solve. They learn how to put together electronic building blocks like power, inputs, and outputs and create simple circuits that can be used to construct gadgets and meet design challenges.
Students will use a vast array of critical thinking skills during their time in the library makerspace and learning lab. Most often, they will be honing the attributes related to scientific investigation such as hypothesizing, predicting, planning, analyzing, correlating, interpreting, validating, and refining. They will also collaborate, use models and simulations to explain their ideas, and transfer understanding among systems. They will be able to use the equipment in novel and distinctive ways to meet challenges and communicate their knowledge and thinking.
