Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious, creative individuals who excel when given the chance to actively participate in their own learning. As a biology teacher, the subject matter isn't the problem, it's the medium. While topics such as genetics and the human body are inherently interesting to them, the challenge is finding a way to engage and maintain their attention span. As with all teenagers, the most effective solution is technology.
My students belong to the Youtube generation and they are eager to put those skills to work in the classroom.
They crave a creative means to practice and demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter, and access to video editing software will enable them to do this.
My Project
When given the opportunity to choose a means of presenting information, technology is always the first choice for my students. Posters, Powerpoint slides, and models just don't excite them the way that creating videos do. Whether it's a music video about the human body systems, a skit demonstrating lab safety skills, or an animation of the steps of cell division, I've seen my students create amazing things with just their phones. Unfortunately, without a computer to edit and share these creations their impact is limited.
Having a Macbook Air in the classroom would allow my students to take their science creations to the next level and let them to become the teachers.
With a Macbook and imovie software they would be able to edit and produce more advanced forms of media. Students always learn and retain information better when they are the ones actively participating in the teaching process. My students will be able to research topics, create and edit educational videos, and screen them to their classmates. Whether it's making rap videos to review the steps of the scientific method or starring in mock news reports about the spread of infectious diseases, my students will be the ones teaching their peers.
As part of our graduate profile, our district has placed a heavy emphasis on graduating students who are "effective and ethical users of technology". For many of my students school is the only place where advanced technology is available to them. This project will not only move my students further towards this goal, but it will help to keep them excited about science and engaged in the learning process.
