This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an inner-city high school in Indianapolis, Indiana, where most of my students are faced with challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. Many students are unable to afford the supplies necessary for them to be successful in high school.

Several of our students come from backgrounds where they must have a job to support their families and school is not their main focus. Our school has made great strides in preparing our students for life after high school, and we want to continue that success as we continue this school year.
My Project
I have selected basic school supplies my students need to be successful. Many of my students do not have a pencil or other classroom supplies when they walk through my door and even more lack of motivation to be at school.
Each day, I hand out many classroom supplies to my students who need them not only for my class, but throughout the rest of the day as well.
The paper is necessary because we use a lot of it when taking notes and showing work. Most students do not have the resources for notebooks and pencils. The colored paper allows my students to better organize their papers as they take 8 classes and white paper can easily be lost or mixed up with their other classwork.
Highlighters and pens help students mark up the text more effectively and increase their reading comprehension. As a reward, I like to print certificates and frame them for students to keep as a record of their achievement. This is a great motivator for many of them.
