My students need family engagement packs to reinforce literacy concepts at home, and prizes such as legos, Play Doh and puzzle balls to supplement their prize box.
We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. While the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. They see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and love to make me proud.
My first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with; they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
We are requesting a variety of family engagement packs to support our lower-level students at home. When speaking with parents, many state that they are unsure of how to better support their child at home.
Many students enter first grade below grade level, so it is our hope that by providing these family engagement packs, students will be more motivated to review literacy concepts at home.
We are requesting the word building pack to support their ability to stretch out words to hear individual sounds, and lastly, the sight words pack will support their fluency and recognition of common sight words. These skills will help them to build a foundation for future success in school. These kits are in both English and Spanish which allow success for all the families in my classroom.
Last year, our school implemented a positive behavior intervention system (PBIS). I mirrored this system in my own classroom, and I really saw a difference in the positive behaviors amongst the students! The only problem is, they are so terrific I am running out of ways to reward them! I am requesting rewards that will appeal to both the girls and boys in the class including Legos, Puzzle Balls, Play-Doh, and coloring books. The students themselves have requested these specific incentives, so I know they will be highly motivated to earn these prizes. I plan on giving them away or letting them choose when they do something extra-special or meet a goal at the end of the week. The Legos kit is to reward those kids who work extra hard during the week, since they love to build. My kids deserve it!
