My students need binders, binder pouches, double dice, plastic beads, and mosaic paper tiles to create Math Tool Kits.

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics." This quote sums up my philosophy on using hands-on manipulatives to teach my mathematicians. My school services over 750 Pre-K through fourth grade students. We are a high poverty area, with the majority of our students on free, or reduced, lunch.
My 26 first grade students; however, come to school everyday with a smile and a desire to learn.
Math is definitely their favorite subject. With the implementation of the Louisiana State Standards and the Compass Evaluation System, the rigor and achievement levels expected of my first graders have been raised. The use of hands-on math manipulatives during whole group and small group math instruction can help to increase student understanding by providing a visual representation of the math concept being learned.
The binders and binder pouches will serve as a way of organizing the variety of math mats and manipulatives we use everyday. Some of these manipulatives are the double dice. These dice can be used in a variety of ways to help students understand addition and subtraction relationships and strategies. One way I plan on using them is to have my students roll the dice and create addition and subtraction sentences using the numbers they roll. They will then discuss which strategy they used to solve their problems. The plastic beads will be used to create hands-on number lines the students will be able to manipulate to assist them in solving problems. The mosaic paper tiles can also be used in many ways. My students will use them to show a visual representation of the addition and subtraction problems they are working on.
