Help me give my students quality tools like barens, butchers tray palettes and a light box for a new experience of creating art! These tools will enable us to do a variety of projects for years to come.
My students are all in beginning high school art. Some are truly beginners, some have developed great art skills already. Some are 9th graders and some are seniors. They are diverse in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomics as well. This high school pulls from some of the most underserved and most privileged areas of the city. I want all students to have access to quality instruction and materials from the start, regardless of their background or whether or not they continue on to the more advanced art classes offered at the school.
I want to introduce my students to an array of art media so each one has the opportunity to find something they enjoy.
We will use these tools for painting, printmaking, and drawing projects. Each different media appeals to different students. For example, relief printmaking appeals to an array of students, some of whom enjoy the carving aspect, some of whom enjoy the drawing and planning aspect, some of whom enjoy the printing aspect and working with color.
My Project
The resources I am requesting would use up too much of my budget ordinarily. But will last a long time and save money over time that can be used for more expendable supplies like paper and paint. I would love to have the butcher trays for use as both paint and ink palettes. The brayers and barens can be used for relief printmaking as well as a variety of other projects. A light box is great to have for students who have less confidence in their drawing skills--they can draw on cheap paper and trace the version they like onto quality paper for a final draft.
Art gives students an opportunity to develop creative and critical thinking skills in a direct, hands-on way.
I believe students today especially need the opportunity to work with their hands, to manipulate materials in the analog world. Each student will respond differently to different media and generate novel approaches to open ended questions. Please help me give students the opportunity to experience a multiplicity of media.
