Help me give my students calculators, my classroom a VGA projector cable, and an extension cord to be able to use our telescope outside. Expanding our technology capabilities will extend learning into more natural spaces!
I teach high school Physics and Astronomy in downtown San Francisco. It's been a privilege for me to teach this diverse group of students during the last 3 years. In the rapidly gentrifying area of San Francisco, 80% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 50% of them are English Language Learners.
My students impress me daily with being bi -, tri-, or quad-lingual - These students are wildly creative and incredibly sweet.
As the sponsor of the Society of Women Engineers and a teacher of Project Based Physics & Astronomy, I want to help give these students the engineering skills and experiences that will inspire them to pursue Environmentally conscious, STEM careers in the Bay Area.
In the past, we've taken trips to see UC Berkeley's Engineering Department and gone on (their first ever) camping trips to see Point Reyes National Park. These experiences have helped envision their futures and connected these city kids to the natural environment. Help inspire this creative group of students to engineering future solutions the greatest problems of our age.
My Project
Our school was privileged enough to recently received an old computerized telescope for use in our Astronomy class. However, it runs on electricity and needs to be plugged in! Help us be able to use it outdoors with a 100-foot power cable!
We will be able to look at planets, galaxies, the moon, and sun; bringing Astronomy to life and grounding our students to their place in the universe.
The VGA cable and splitter will help me to double project in a long and narrow classroom, where students frequently complain they cannot see the board.
The Calculators will help our low-income physics students complete physics problems on their own, without distracting them with their cell phone.
