This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As we all understand, the COVID pandemic has impacted students, families, and schools at disproportionate rates depending on a number of factors, one of which includes socioeconomic status which directly affects access to materials and contributes to academic success.

Given the horrendous gaps of inequality that the pandemic exposed, my students came back to school at an academic disadvantage compared to peers in other neighborhoods, yet they made some of the greatest gains in our state.

What I love about my students is how they came back from their version of distance learning with pure eagerness to learn. With that said, we are still in the process of recovering the priceless face-to-face classroom learning time that was lost and has impacted basic skills like handwriting and talking to peers. The supplies from this project will improve student communication via written and digital mediums.

Our school is honing in on handwriting this month. Students need quality erasers that won't tear their papers and cause frustration during an already frustrating process. They need exposure to a variety of tools to express themselves, including quality gel pens that lessen the barrier of getting thoughts down through smooth application. With color, students are able to layer on meaningful edits and highlight important concepts. Furthermore, stylus pens encourage precision on iPads, empowering students and increasing their confidence when everyone’s work is being displayed on the screen. Above all, the materials in this project reinforce the idea that student voice is valued and we are devoted to supporting its formation across a variety of mediums.
