We are a Title I school. We do have many students who need free or reduced-price lunch or extra food on the weekend. Being close to the Gulf of Mexico, we also live in a community that has wonderful job opportunities available including Chevron, NOAA, USM Research and Sea Facility, EPA, Department of Forestry, etc. Students not only do not realize that they are there, or realize that they might love working for those places. I want to change that for my kids.
I want them to realize they can achieve success with what is local.
The students are 8 to 10 years old, an age that setting good habits and structure will benefit them for a life time.
My students love exploring reading, science, the arts , and yes a few even enjoy math. I am not the only person that makes them feel this way, it is the whole school and the whole community that drives learning.
My Project
One of the best gifts you can give a child is organization. It is a life skill that will help in all aspects of life. If a child can organize their tools for life, it will help organize the mind as well.
We are hoping to use these items in our class to hold living work journals.
These journals will guide the students through their lessons and thoughts about learning. They are key to understanding a subject, not just learning and practicing. Having the seat sacks for the kids' supplies to have at their finger tips will aid in success and optimize our valuable time.
