Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from urban backgrounds with a high rate of low socioeconomic status. Despite and often because of their backgrounds our students push to excel in gaining skills applicable to their future careers. Many students are leading the way for their entire families and often are the first in their families to receive a formal or get into higher education.
My students have displayed an interest in engineering as a career and have proven themselves dedicated and capable of taking on an upper-level engineering course with all the additional responsibilities and expectations.
These students come from multiple levels of engineering experience, some are currently freshmen, sophomores, or juniors in a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) course, Introduction to Engineering Design, while others are sophomores or juniors in the PLTW course, Principles of Engineering. Several students have already undergone internships with a local aircraft company over the summer.
My Project
We are thrilled to be able to teach a Project Lead the Way course, a new Aerospace Engineering class! The only hardship (which we’re willing to navigate) is that the room is in a renovated grocery store building across the street from the other Engineering courses due to lack of space in our building. As a result, the Aerospace Engineering students will not have access to the tools that they have been using throughout their Engineering classes and they’re a bit too big to lug across the street every day.
The goal of this project is to outfit this new workspace with the tools they need to make the Aerospace Engineering class a success.
Our Aerospace Engineering class directly aligns with our district’s goal to make sure that students are career-ready by increasing certifications and college credit. These tools will also be used during the time our students will spend building a kit plane through Tango Flight.
We hope for our enrollment in this course to increase each year and the resources provided through this project will be used for many years while we work on implementing, perfecting, and growing this program at our school. This is only the beginning of great things happening at NHS.
