Learning to read is one of the most essentials skills a child will acquire in school. It is especially important to students in primary grades where learning to read is still a new and challenging experience. It is imperative to lay a strong foundation for students to build upon in later years.
My first and second graders are from an area of high poverty and 80% of the students at our school receive free/reduced lunch.
I have a very diverse class and many of my students are English language learners. These students are working on learning both English as well as their home language. My students love working with hands-on activities and would love to have these tools for our reading and writing time.
My Project
The struggling readers in my class need the alphabet tubs and books to help them recognize letters and sounds. The tubs would also help my students build their vocabulary. These tools can help both my first and second graders, especially those who are struggling in reading. The exposure to new and interesting vocabulary words will help all of my students.
The flip books will help my students make connections between letter patterns and blends. Being able to physically change the letters to make a new word will help them to read and decode more difficult words and read more fluently.
The bins will keep our library organized to ensure that students can find the books that are just right for them. My students are learning to navigate both the school and the classroom library and a more structured system would help them with their organizational skills.
This project would help my first and second graders learn their letters, sounds, and expand their vocabulary.
With these tools, I will be able to differentiate my instruction to work one-on-one with students who need individualized help.
