When students enter my classroom they often times have the attitude of "I don't like math" or "I'm just not a math person." That is why it is important to me to show my students that math is relevant, applicable, and fun.
Students are most successful when they have ownership of their own learning.
That is why my classroom is designed in a way that nurtures mathematical thinking and discourse.
Inquiry-based learning gives students the opportunity to discover mathematical concepts and push themselves to learn at their highest potential. My students learn how to use the language of mathematics, how to collaborate, how to think critically, and how to problem solve through the processes of inquiry-based learning. When they discover that they really are "math people" they become excited about learning and are eager to learn more.
My students need the tools to make their learning possible.
My Project
Studies have shown that students learn best when they immerse themselves in the learning process. That is why I have designed my classroom and curriculum presentation around inquiry-based learning. Students work collaboratively to complete tasks that are problem-based and relevant to the world around them.
Students will use these tools to collaborate in small groups and collectively as a class, collect and analyze data, assemble project presentations, and complete formative and summative assessments.
The dry erase boards, markers, and erasers will provide my students with an alternative to traditional, paper and pencil practice assignments and assessments. Students can use these materials to practice solving equations, graphing data, and graphing functions. The ease of erasing mistakes from a dry erase board emphasizes that my classroom is a safe place to make and learn from mistakes.
The colored paper, scissors, and glue sticks will be used for student interactive notebooks. These notebooks are used as review and study aids when students are completing course work and preparing for assessments. The colored paper is integral in the creation of the interactive notebooks because it is more engaging and better for student memory than black and white text.
The chart paper, chart paper markers, and roll of graph paper will be used for student collaboration, presentations, and projects. The chart paper and graph paper will be used to create displays as student prepare to present their semester-long projects. The markers are needed because they will not bleed through the paper onto the desks, floor, or walls.
These tools are essential to providing students with the opportunities to explore real-world mathematics applications, discover the "why" behind the mathematics, make connections between disciplines, and learn at their highest potential.
