My students are enthusiastic, curious, and driven! Our classroom strives to be equally as bright and inclusive for all learners. Someone once wrote, “What greater joy can a teacher feel than to witness a child’s success?” I want to instill the love of learning in my students as we explore reading, writing, mathematics, science and with the Common Core curriculum at the center of it all.
My students are eager and hands-on learners who take pride in each other’s academic success!
For many of my students, kindergarten is their first year in a classroom environment. A majority of them also qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, are English Language Learners, and/or have Individualized Education Plans. That is why it is essential that they love learning to set a precedent for the rest of their academic careers. We are learning how to become lifelong readers and writers through engaging lessons with support from books, guest speakers, realia, field trips, and technology.
My Project
Kindergarten has now become a pivotal grade-level, with high math and reading expectations. Currently, with virtual learning, my students are in need of tangible tools to support their learning in these subject areas. My students require math materials to exercise their ability to see relationships between numbers and wonder about mathematical practices that occur in their every day lives. Daily practice allows my students to develop their fluency in math. My students will use these linking cubes, spinners, number lines, and 3D shapes during our daily lessons for deeper mathematical discussions. I am also asking for leveled readers to encourage and guide my students through the reading process. Currently, my students are using digital books, however it has been challenging for many of my 5-6 year olds. We need tangible books to develop concept of print. We will use these readers during Small Groups for guided reading time. When students have access to books at their level they can practice decoding, take reading risks, and build confidence.
With these new materials, my children will engage in our math discussions and will be on their way to becoming life-long avid readers, while we are safely learning from home.
The best way for kindergarteners to develop math skills is using concrete tools, and to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest and growth in math and reading since the beginning of the school year, and this project will only help enrich their experiences even more!
