I teach in a small community in central Florida, about an hour outside of Orlando. I teach math and science to 40 kids, one group in the morning, one in the afternoon, and I LOVE what I do!
Every year I receive a new group of students to love, but what remains consistent each year is the love I have for teaching and the joy my students show for learning.
I start each year focusing on the "superpowers" each student brings to the classroom, and how they can each use that power to grow as thinkers, creators, readers, writers, and doers over the course of the school year. We have a "Growth Mindset" in the classroom, and I am excited to see just how much each one of my kiddos continues to grow this year.
My Project
The third grade science curriculum is really fun because there are many opportunities for kids to explore the nature of science as they collect data about mass and volume. Who doesn't love science when it involves some hands-on activities?
The problem I face is that whenever I plan activities that involve measurement tools, there are too few tools available in my school.
We are good at sharing what we have, but that doesn't always put a tool in the hand of every child. And merely watching a teacher demonstration of measuring mass with a pan balance or volume with a graduated cylinder is hardly engaging at all!
My goal is to have enough balances, graduated cylinders, and thermometers (for when we get to experiments that involve measuring temperature) so that my students can work in groups of three. Not only will my students be more engaged, but they will learn a lot more about how to accurately take measurements when they are using the tools for measurement themselves.
