This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am excited to start this year because I have a very dynamic group of 7th graders for ELA. I know many of them well from teaching their 6th grade Social Studies class last year. The discussions that we had about history were rich with thoughtfulness and depth. They demonstrated their growing critical thinking skills when we brought in historical topics, like the factors that led to the fall of the Roman Empire, to the present day challenges we face in America.
I am excited to continue to foster their growth this year in ELA.
I anticipate great conversations about literature and a lot of amazing writing.
My Project
As 7th graders, I expect students to work on being more autonomous in their learning. I use work stations that utilize independent and small group work. To create a flexible classroom, I need furniture and storage to support students in this work. I was fortunate to receive a new chair 3 years ago, but that is the extent of updated furniture I have been provided by my school. I have received new books from my school and created work stations and materials myself for my students. The literature and paper organizers and shelves will help me to manage the materials in my classroom. Providing flexible seating allows students to move around the room when they need to in order to stay productive. Also, access to individual timers helps students to monitor their own progress within class.
The tools I am requesting in this project will help me to create the organized and supportive learning environment my students deserve.
Having an organized classroom fosters independence and responsibility in my students.
