My students are part of the behavior intervention program. They are in grades K-3. My students have struggled behaviorally to met expectations in a mainstream settings.
Many of my students have experienced significant amounts of trauma in their lives and we are trying to incorporate trauma informed practices to better support their needs.
Implementing a trauma-informed approach, means that we understand the widespread impact of trauma and that we also understand the journey to recovery for students. We also recognize the symptoms of trauma in students, and we respond with integrating knowledge about trauma into policies and practices with these students. We increasingly are working to create a classroom structure that promotes safety for the student and that helps students manage overwhelming response to stress.
My Project
The wobble chairs and footrest will help students to calm and to bring themselves back into regulation. Students who have experience trauma need movement to bring a calm and peace back into their environment. Drumming helps students to understand the effect of stress on their body by demonstrating with rhythm. Drumming also provides an outlet for students to express and to regulate their emotions.
