My students are part of the FIRST Robotics Team 3490 at CBHS in Summerville, SC. We have over 40 students on our team dedicated to the values of FIRST, leadership, and teamwork. These students amaze me with their creative thinking, their computer skills and their love to engage in hands-on experiences. They love the challenge of designing, coding & building a competition robot in just 6 weeks. Competing in FIRST helps open them up to new hands-on projects with different hand tools, CNC machine, 3D printing, Java programs, electrical, marketing and business. This program also helps the students develop social skills and importance of teamwork that will be invaluable whenever they go out into the world.
These students are eager to learn new skills in designing, electrical, building & programming a competition robot.
I want to see these students strive and grow with the skills they can learn in this program! I am truly lucky to have a great group of students to work with! Our community has also been crucial in their support with our team and the growing field of STEM.
My Project
Our build team members will use these machine toolings such as the 1-1/8" reamer used to make precision holes for our bearing applications. We will use square end mills on our CNC machine to cut material to fabricate our competition robot.
Machine toolings are consumable items that wear out fast and new ones are needed often in order to run the CNC machine.
We can't build our competition robot without the CNC machine and these tools.
Our team members will learn how to use our CNC machine from guidance by our experienced mentors. These mentors volunteer their time to teach these students valuable hands-on lessons for their future. Most of the members on our build team go on to college in the engineering field.
