This is my first year at a new school, and I will be teaching a large group of 5th graders. I love 5th graders because they are becoming much more aware of the world around them. They are beginning to want more independence, but are still looking for someone to guide them.
I'm so excited to teach this group of students; teaching brings me a fulfillment and joy that almost nothing else does.

My Project
I am very passionate about behavior. As time moves forward, teachers are seeing more and more behavior issues - some very serious. Many teachers now have the responsibility of training kids to have appropriate behavior.
While the goal is, of course, to be intrinsically motivated, elementary school is where students learn how to be intrinsically motivated, and a prize bin with bouncy balls, toy cars, putty, wristbands, etc., is a great tool to teach this skill.
My behavior philosophy is positive - instead of punishment I believe in training children and teaching them positive and negative consequences, as well as the why for behavior. Some of the tools I will use focus on trust, building strong relationships, teaching weekly social skills lessons, and having brain breaks. Prizes are an important, basic tool in teaching foundational behavior skills.

I know that by teaching children appropriate behavior, as well as helping them understand and manage their emotions, they will be much more able to learn, access curriculum, contribute in positive ways to society, and have meaningful and lasting relationships with others.
