My classroom is nestled in a midwest city full of enthusiastic learners from diverse backgrounds. There are 33 languages spoken at my school. My second graders are kind, helpful and hardworking. They are eager to tackle any problem I present. Our strength comes in our differences.
My students began the year with anxiety when it came to solving math word problems.
We are developing a growth mindset as we see math as part of everyday life. We are looking at math as a subject for curiosity and discussion. We call ourselves "Mathematicians" and use math talk to make sense of problems. My students respectfully listen to their peers to understand what they did . This has developed not only math skills but language, social skills and it has boost their confidence in math.
My Project
The mathematicians in my classroom use critical thinking skills everyday beginning with this questions, "What is this problem asking us to do?". They share their ideas and explore a variety of strategies using hands on materials . They learn from each other as they share their thinking orally and visually drawing out arrays, pictures and number stories.
The materials requested such as large magnetic number lines, counters, tens frames and base ten blocks would allow my students a way to share their thinking with their peers.
These materials will contribute to the success of my students as visual aids are essential for English Language Learners making it easier to remember concepts.
