My Project

I am part of a first grade team at an Online School. Our students learn from home using both traditional materials such as books, paper, crayons, and pencils, and technology, using an iPad. Our students represent a wide range of strengths, previous learning experience, and needs. Sometimes it is hard for them to understand and learn the skills and concepts we are teaching because they lack basic, hands-on learning tools and supplies that would be readily available in other schools.

Our students are asking hands-on materials for learning first grade math concepts such as the value of numbers, counting, and addition and subtraction.

They need unifix cubes for counting, and making patterns. They can use the unifix cubes to compare numbers (greater than/less than) by counting out and building different lengths of cubes. They also need ten frames for addition and subtraction, and hundreds charts to help them understand larger numbers.

We would like to create math tool kits so that each child can have his or her own a set of supplies to keep at home and use during our lessons. The tool kit will help them understand the concepts, and it will make learning fun. Thank you for caring about and helping our learners.
