Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in a Title 1 school in Northern Manhattan. I currently have 29 students in my class, but could have up to 32 in any given year. Ninety-three percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
During the past two years our class has adopted a new math program entitled "Everyday Math." Everyday math is an exploratory math program which applies the math that the students are learning to everyday situations. The program has been a wonderful change from the textbooks of years past.
Everyday math requires that each child have a tool kit that holds all of their math manipulatives. The students are responsible for the maintenance of the following items: a dry erase slate, markers and eraser for the slate, a math template, multiplication fact triangles, fraction cards, counters, pattern blocks and their testing tool kits. Having these items empowers the children to take ownership of their learning, however, they are children and some of the materials have disappeared.
Each child has a baggie to use as a tool kit, but the baggies are falling apart. They have holes and as a result some of the tools are falling out and the kids don't have the materials that they need. I recently acquired heavy duty book baggies that have been a godsend.
The materials I am requesting are these same book baggies, but to be used as math tool kits. The idea for this proposal actually came from a student of mine. As I distributed the pouches for books, he asked if he could have another for his math tools. I had to reject his request because I don't have enough for the whole class.
I would like forty of these clear, heavy-duty book pouches for my students to use as math tool kits. Twenty-nine will be used immediately; the others will be saved to replace any that disappear.
