My students need a cabinet to place outside our classroom to share our love of books with the other classrooms. And new titles to read...

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Last year I finally got my students to begin to see the joy of reading. I challenged my 7th graders to read at least 40 books each. They did that and more!
We live in a small, rural town that has been hit like many other schools in California by budget cuts.
With last year's budget cuts, we lost both our librarian and use of our library. My classroom has become the surrogate room with ALL the good books. But with 42 students, it is difficult to allow other classes to come into my room to check out books. we have 7th and 8th graders that love to read and we would like to expand our resources.
My Project
We would love to have a locking steel cabinet to place books into that would sit outside our classroom. This would allow other students at our school to check out books without trying to crowd into my classroom.
Also, we definitely could use more titles in our room. These students have been with me in 6th, 7th, and now 8th grade. They have read most of the books in my room. And I want to keep them engaged in reading.
Two years ago we received a grant to design and build a reading garden.
This has now happened, and I want to make sure that current and future students are given the chance to embark on the journey of finding new and lasting friends in books.
