I teach elementary age students with intensive support needs. My students range from 2nd-5th grade and are a diverse group with a wide range of abilities, learning styles, and needs. Due to the unique makeup of my classroom, I utilize a wide variety of instructional methods and materials. Some of my students learn best using multi-sensory approaches, while other prefer visual or auditory instruction. I am always looking for new, exciting, and innovative ways to engage and encourage my students and to provide them with tools and materials that will meet their unique academic and social-emotional needs.
My Project
The Toniebox is an imagination-building, screen-free digital listening experience that plays stories and songs, and allows children to record their own content and listen to it over and over again. I plan to use these in the classroom for many purposes such as independent reading, fluency practice, and writing centers. My special education students often have difficulty reading text on their grade level, but the Toniebox and tonie figures will allow them to listen to a story or text while following along. In addition, my students can record themselves reading a text which will help increase engagement and improve fluency. They can also listen to themselves or peers reading stories, or I can record a read aloud for them to listen to independently during reading lessons. The Toniebox and tonies can also be used during writing workshop, where students can record themselves reading their own writing, listen to it read back, and then edit and revise their work. Additionally, the recordings can be used to peer edit, since many of my students struggle with reading. The children will be able to listen to their peers' writing and make comments and suggestions without having to read it themselves. This will help with peer interaction and partner work, which is often difficult in a special education setting. The Tonieboxes and tonie figures will provide access to independent level, high-interest, and engaging language arts opportunities for my group of intensive support students.
